Chris was born and raised in the area and grew up in Corn, Oklahoma. He considers himself a Farm boy since he was raised and worked on his family’s farm and was always a hard worker. Chris enjoys sports and has a collection of baseball and basketball cards. He once owned a Yamaha 1100 bike and wishes now that he hadn’t gotten rid of. When ask about his goals for the future the response was: “I would just like to be successful in my endeavors.” This interviewer believes he has succeeded. Interviewed by: Webmaster |

Recently I had a chance to sit down with Chris Gossen at the Bank of Western Oklahoma in Cordell for an interview to post here on the Spotlight page. The Bank of Western Oklahoma has a long history of being a strong and stable financial institution in the community. Chris has worked at the bank for just under 3 years. When ask why he got into banking his response was: “I just enjoy people and I like to visit. Whenever someone comes into the bank I’ll sit down with them and just talk. And one of my greatest pleasures is to be able to help people.” This friendly attitude seems to be common with all the employees at the bank. |

My name is Claudia Gray, Executive Secretary for the Cordell Chamber of Commerce for over thirteen years. I love Cordell. I love our outstanding Washita County Courthouse, one of the most photographed courthouses in the state. I love people, and especially love visiting with the tourist who come into the office. I think Cordell is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I raised two children here. I am a "huge supporter" of Cordell. My office is yours whether you are a member, non-member, traveler or just need information. The Cordell Chamber is here to assist you. |

Total PC is one of our newer businesses in town and has already established a reputation of excellence in sales and service. Dustin Smith started his business about 6 months ago offering PC repair, lost data retrieval, onsite networking and web design. When I ask Dustin what his goals were in the future for his business he replied: “I hope to expand and offer services such as wireless and DSL internet and more.” Once Dustin gets going, there is no telling how many more great ideas he will come up with in the near future. Dustin was raised in Cordell and graduated from the local High School, then attended SWOSU at Sayre majoring in computer science. I ask if he had any collections or other hobbies and he said: “Do you mean outside of computers?” From his dedication to work, you can tell his time is heavily taken up with everything to do with computers. Then he added “Well, I use to collect clocks of all kinds, especially Grandfather clocks, but I ran out of room. So now, I just collect pocket watches.” When questioned further he said that his pocked watch collection numbered about 400. |
|
I found Dustin to be a very friendly and helpful guy and always eager to answer any technical computer question you may have. His Mom Earlene is in the store much of the time and also ready to give her advice with a friendly smile. Stop in and say hello. They are great people and they would enjoy visiting with you. I was finally able to meet with Landon Jones today. Landon is an officer at the well established financial institution of The First National Bank and Trust Company. I found him to be an enthusiastic and conscientious young man. He graciously sat down with me for an interview and proceeded to tell me about his work. I discovered that the main office is in Weatherford and was chartered in 1964. The Cordell Branch was purchased in 1987 and the Hinton Branch was built in 1997. He continued to tell me that “The majority of our employees have been a part of the bank family for 15+ years! Decisions are made locally by people who live in our neighborhood, shop in the same stores, and eat in the same restaurants as our customers.” Landon is obviously proud of this fine institution and the people that work there, and rightly so. |
|
Landon is a native of Cordell. Together with his brother their land produces wheat and cattle. He has a strong interest in quarter horses and related to that subject he has been involved in polo, showing horses and has done some roping. He has even dabbled in a little blacksmithing. This is obviously a man of many talents. When ask about his goals he wanted to devote his time and effort into his work at the bank and his farm. After talking with Landon at length I came to realize that he can take on any projects and set any number of goals and he will indeed succeed on whatever he undertakes. Much of Landon’s time is taken up by his dedication to his work. However, he is never so busy that he can’t sit down and talk to his friends or customers. So, next time you pass by the Bank come in for some professional financial advice or just pop in and say Hello. Landon is usually there to welcome you. Interview by: Webmaster |

My name is Sheryl McComas, I began working at Cordell Christian Home in 1994, and became the administrator in 1998. I love the town of Cordell, where I’ve been a resident since 1983. My two daughters grew up here, received a great education in our school system and are proud to call Cordell their hometown. Being a part of the county Relay for Life, the county fair, the Cordell Chamber and other community activities have been rewarding experiences for us and for my second family, the residents and staff of Cordell Christian Home. The mission we have maintained since our inception, and carry out daily, I view as vital to the people of our area. Not only do we provide necessary services, and do so in a proficient and personalized manner, we are also one of the largest employers around, maintaining a staff of just over 100. Our location at the north end of College Street, in a residential part of town, is perfect for us. Our home is your home, and we always welcome visits from our neighbors and friends. Cordell Christian Home opened their doors in 1962 as a retirement home in response to a need recognized by several members of the local Church of Christ. Within the first few years it became apparent that there was also a need for nursing care, so a 25 bed nursing unit was added to the original 84 bed facility. This need increased over time and soon Cordell Christian Home made a transition to a fully licensed nursing home. In 1999 an 8 bed unit was dedicated to skilled nursing care, and currently we are licensed for 110 beds, all certified now for skilled nursing as needed, but generally providing intermediate long term care. |

The other day I wanted to stop by the new store in town called Sugar Plum Gift Shop. When my eye caught the beautiful items in the display window, I knew I had arrived at my destination. I was greeted by one of the new owners, Linda Dennis, then proceeded to take in all the unusual items she had to offer. There were large impressive pieces and small inexpensive gifts that would be perfect for a Mother’s Day or Teacher Appreciation event. There were also hand made crafts that are one-of-a-kind items you just won’t see anywhere else. I was impressed that even the display tables holding the items for sale were decorative. Linda clearly has an eye for style. I was told that the store also offers classes in arts & crafts such as beginner and advanced scrapbooking, beading, cake decorating and more. When ask how she got into this business she said “I was a crafter in high school. I learned a lot from my Mom and started by making Raggedy Ann dolls”. I personally liked her note pads that resemble parchment paper or stone. |
|
Linda commented several times how welcoming the community was to her. Being from out of town she wondered how she and her family would be accepted. Her mind was set to ease in short order by the countless people of Cordell warmly greeting and wishing her well.
Linda is from Texas and her husband, Alan, is from Oklahoma. They moved to Cordell recently because Alan was transferred to the local ALCO store. Linda is family oriented and is involved with the PTA and volunteers at the school. When ask about her goals she replied by telling me “My husband and family mean everything to me. They help and support me in my endeavors and the decisions I make. And I believe that if you are successful in your home life and family, then you will be successful in whatever you do in life”. Well put Linda.
